Daily Prompt: Tourist Trap

What’s your dream tourist destination — either a place you’ve been and loved, or a place you’d love to visit? What about it speaks to you?

The place I would love to return to for a vacation is called, ‘Palacete de Cazulas’.  It is in southern Spain on what they refer to as the ‘Costa del Sol’.  My grandparents decided to treat the family to two trips to Europe when I was in high school.  The first was to Italy just after my 9th grade year.  The second was to Spain just after I finished 11th grade.  I have no idea how much this trip must have cost them.  My parents only paid for the air fare and shopping expenses.  The pictures below do the beauty of the palace little justice, but it is just a quick taste.  They have also redone the interior rather extensively since I was last there.  I loved to explore the interior and spend time on the lower lawn, which had an extensive panoramic view.  One had to wander through a beautiful garden to get there.  I stayed in the room next to the master bedroom.  My brothers stayed in the tower’s room.  We ate outside on most days, and the cooks were phenomenal.

The road to get there was a windy and dusty one lane road.  We often prayed no one would be trying to drive the opposite direction, because there were few places to pull over to let people pass.  I think we encountered one driver going to opposite direction only once, maybe twice, during our two week stay.  Fortunately, it happened at a place where there was room to pull over.

The nearest town was Otivar, and one had to either drive out to the main road and then to town, or hike down to the river and then hike up the opposite side of the steep hills we were in.  I did the latter once, a day or so after we arrived.  We should not have, since we were still jet-lagged and quite tired.  The path was so steep in parts that one almost had to put a hand out to help climb it.

I have pictures, but they have yet to be scanned and saved on a computer.  One of these days I will get to that.  The two below show the palace entrance with the chapel in the background and the lower lawn where I spent a fair amount of time when we were not exploring.  I really hope to go back one day, but if not, it will remain a cherish memory.
